Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are quadrupedal, cloven-hoofed mammals kept as livestock. Though technically the term sheep applies to any species in the genus Ovis, in everyday use it almost always refers to domestic sheep. Domestic sheep are the most numerous of their genus, and are most likely descended from the wild mouflon. Sheep were one of the earliest animals to be domesticated for agricultural purposes, and are primarily valued for their fleece and meat.
